What is a Individual Voluntary Arrangement (IVA)?
An individual voluntary arrangement is a form of insolvency that can be used by individuals wanting to avoid bankruptcy and pay back their debts. The individual agrees to a contractual arrangement with creditors to repay any debts owed in monthly payments at an amount they can afford.
IVAs can only be used on unsecured debts including personal loans and credit cards. Secured debts such as mortgages and secured loans must be repaid separately.

What are the implications for someone with an IVA?
Individuals with an IVA are more likely to keep hold of their property than if they are declared bankrupt, with homeowners allowed to maintain mortgage payments or re-mortgage if there is equity in the home.
As with DROs and bankruptcies, IVAs remain on an individual's credit file for six years and is likely to affect credit rating as soon as the arrangement is agreed. Creditors are unable to take legal action to reclaim debt.Sign up
